Tck tck tck won a “Game Changer Award” from We Media, an annual conference in Miami bringing together innovators, entrepreneurs and leaders working in media, technology, business and communications, held this year from March 9th to 11th.

“Game Changers” are people, projects, ideas and organisations recognised for leading change and inspiring a better world through media. Tck tck tck is credited for using state-of-the-art digital advocacy, online petition aggregation and community-building that inspired involvement and action through media. This gave a voice to civil society’s concerns about climate change on a global level.

The ‘tck tck tck - Time for Climate Justice’ campaign was one of more than 200 partner campaigns that  collectively campaigned under the tck tck tck banner for a fair, ambitious and binding climate agreement to be delivered in Copenhagen.

A strategic partnership between the Global Humanitarian Forum (GHF) and global advertising agency Havas Worldwide/EuroRSCG produced the tck tck tck open source concept. The tck tck tck creative and rationale, developed pro bono by EuroRSCG, was adopted as it communicated a sense of urgency with time literally ticking down to a point when the world would have an opportunity to take action to halt the adverse effects of climate change – Copenhagen 7th December.

The GHF used the tck tck tck open source material for its ‘Time for Climate Justice’ campaign. The appeal and universality of the tck symbol was such that it was adopted by the Global Campaign for Climate Action (GCCA) coalition as the unifying symbol for its over 200 partners. The GHF’s ‘Time for Climate Justice’ campaign was one of the founding partners of the GCCA.

Climate Justice has become a rallying call since the climate summit in Copenhagen, and a new resolution adopted by the EU Parliament shows that some politicians are starting to listen.  Members of the European Parliament (MEP) say the EU and Member States should enforce the principle of ‘climate justice’ in future international climate negotiations in a resolution adopted on 10 February 2010.

MEPs also urged the EU not to falter in its commitment to combating climate change and to set an ambitious target for CO2 reduction greater than 20% for 2020. The resolution emphasized that the delay in reaching an international agreement in Copenhagen should not be an excuse to postpone further EU policies to achieve legally binding reduction commitments that already exist.

The movement for Climate Justice continues to put pressure on political leaders around the world to reach a fair, ambitious and binding climate agreement. There is increasing awareness of detrimental effects of climate change on individuals and communities around the world.  A new study by Oxfam showed that Tajikistan will experience greater water shortages and increases in extreme weather as a result of climate change.
